The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy

The compound effect is the strategy of reaping huge rewards from small, seemingly insignificant actions. You cannot improve something until you measure it. You make the choices and must take 100 percent responsibility for everything that happens to you.

My notes are informal and often contain quotes from the book as well as my own thoughts. This summary also includes key lessons and important passages from the book.

The Compound Effect is based on few principles that defined your destiny. The everyday choices will either take you to life you desire or to troubles.

There are 6 simple principles mentioned the book and Darren Hardy talks about each principle in great detail but a simple one where each person include you can put into action, they are – Choices, Habits, Momentum, Influences, Acceleration. After each chapter, you get summary action steps to put into action, which can help you.

The compound effectChoices –  this chapter is about making you aware of the choices you choose that support the expansion of your life. Have you ever thought how quick a day, week, month or even year gone? Well perhaps you have just been sleepwalking through each day and choices.

This chapter really got myself thinking about choices, especially over the last 5 years and more!

Habits – We are all creatures of habit and Darren Hardy lays it out as it is, Straight to the point.  Their good habits and bad habits,  habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form because the behavioral patterns which we repeat become imprinted in your daily life’s  but it is possible to form new habits through repetition “The Compound Effect”

In this chapter really dig deep into your mindset of which habits we choose because we are either motivated by something we want or something we don’t want. For example, if you want to lose weight and start running you won’t try and run 26 miles you take small steps each day and build up each day.

Have clear habits, clear goals and a big why. This is what you learn from the chapter.

Momentum – Sometimes we overthink things which leads to no momentum (something I did to improve on) but talking the first step is the hardest but when your new habit kicks in then momentum will start or like Darren Hardy say’s “Big Mo’.

A good point from the book and think about it:

Ever wonder why successful people tend to get more successful …the rich get richer…the happy get happier ..the lucky get luckier and fast gets faster.

Because they’ve got Big Mo. When it rains, it pours. But momentum can work for both sides of the coin, good and bad habits.

Influences- this chapter is very good like all the book and ask you questions about what you feeding your body and mind each day like its says’ Input: Garbage in, Garbage out. Your brain has one thing in mind: Survival. When the last time you went to do something new or perhaps through of a SkyDrive but didn’t follow through….yes? because you’re brain stop you..correct

So he states whatever you’re putting into your mind is what you get out, positive, inspirational, follow someone who creates success and sees how they conducted themselves each day and model them in your own unique way. There are a few action steps in this chapter that I really recommend following.

Acceleration- when the first 5 principles are in place then acceleration will take over as explained in this chapter. The fundamentals and stories he talks about really open your thinking and explains why going the extra yard will benefit you in the long term.

Darren Hardy tells hoe his friend Alex ask him how to set up a web camera video conference for a job interview to which he replies ‘how bad do you want this job Alex?’ It’s my dream job.

So he told Alex to get on a plane and show up in person Alex replies ‘no need they’re flying in the final three for the last interview. Darren Hardy replied ‘Listen if you want to be in final three, you should separate yourself by doing the unexpected and fly across the on a moment notice and show up in person. That’s how to make a statement. Then research all you can on the company, decision makers the works and believe me much more.

After his advice Alex didn’t take it, he didn’t even make the final three. The moral of the story if you want something pull out of stops and accelerate.  It will pay off in long-term!

-You get started by taking one small step, one action at a time

I want to pull this paragraph which hit home with me and perhaps it might hit home with you.

He said ‘ Ask these simple questions: Look back on your life five years ago.

1, Are you now where you’d thought you be five years later?
2, Have you kicked the bad habits you had said to kick?
3, Are you in shape you wanted to be?
4, Do you have the cushy income, the lifestyle and personal freedom you expected?
5, Do you have the vibrant health, abundant loving relationship and the world-class skills you’d plan on having by this point in your life?

If not, Why? Simple – choices. So it’s time to get the life you want and make a new choice to not let the next fives years be a continuum of the last.

For us ( Me & Family), it’s some of worst 5 years of my life losing both parents which really took the family to darkest points in life.

Ongoing health issues, seeing wife stressed etc. Losing job.Could the list go on like yours perhaps?

But the point of this post is to remove your blinders and see what you doing is good enough because of your the only person which holds the power to change the choices and life.

I’ve now found a way and made a choice that going to change the next 5 years

If you want to start getting yourself into action and jump start I highly recommend reading this book
